We are here to help

You have questions. Lots of them. There are big decisions to be made and it’s not always clear what the options are.

Still have questions?

If we haven’t captured a question you need answered, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

This is the most common question we get asked and the answer is completely dependent on the player – specifically where that player and family want to go in hockey.  We walk each prospective client through what we do and how we can help in their individual hockey journey. Addressing this very important question varies by player as your goals and situation and needs differ from those of the kid next to you. Sometimes an agent/advisor is a fit and sometimes it’s worth the wait to allow the player the opportunity to develop another year. Our job is to help you figure out the best fit.

 It breaks down as follows:

  • If you want to play in the WHL or Usport you can have either an agent or an advisor.
  • If you want to play NCAA you need to have an advisor.

Very simply put, if you want to go to the NCAA you need to have an advisor. The NCAA has strict rules on eligibility for all players – male and female – in all sports.

The main difference is around payment. An agent will take a future percentage of earnings on any professional hockey contracts you sign. Advisors, as outlined by NCAA eligibility rules, must charge a fee per year for services rendered. Now, the annual fee can vary widely and can cause financial strain for some families. It’s key that you know what you are paying for and know what services an advisor can provide for you as a family and as a player.

It is always dependant on location, particularly in relation to where you are and where your advisor lives. With increased access through Instat and live-streamed or online video, it has become easier to watch and help players. For us, we are able to watch every game online, but prefer in-person and are typically able to see 40% OF YOUR GAMES live. Of course, your location may impact accessibility to live scouting, but we’ll know your schedule and make a point of attending your games as often as possible.

We are very selective about who we want to work and who we choose to help move on to Junior A and the NCAA. We cannot take everyone because we cannot help everyone. That said that we look for players that have what we call “upside”: will they transition well to Junior A? Or if they are already in Junior can they transition to the NCAA and contribute?

For us, yes, it is. You cannot do this job well and live up to the responsibilities, expectations, and commitments made to the parents and players as a secondary job. Our primary objective is to help our clients and that is a full-time commitment we take seriously.
